The role of the altar server is to assist the Priest in celebrating the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. It is a great privilege to be so intimately participating in the celebration of the Mass, in which Christ makes Himself present in His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, and by which the Cross and the Resurrection are made present again for the salvation of the world. The altar server must therefore carry out their duties with attention, reverence, and devotion. Even more importantly, the altar server must strive, with the grace of God, to live a life in conformity with what is celebrated at the altar - a life filled with faith, hope and love. Furthermore, the altar server assists the people to participate at Mass. While the Priest takes on the role as primary celebrant the whole Christian community unites itself to the sacrifice of Christ at every Mass. And thus, by their example of attentiveness, prayerfulness and reverence, the altar servers indirectly lead the people to a meaningful celebration of the mysteries at the altar.
